One of the best gifts you can give a new parent is the reassurance that he or she is doing a good job. When we start out, we’re all the same—a mess of confusion, worry, and the deer in the headlights look. That’s fine; how many parents do you know who start out feeling 100% confident and continue every step of the way?
Since January is Baby Safety Month, you may wish to give the gift of a worry-free state of being: tell your new mama or daddy that he or she is doing a good job, that at least half of those baby safety products out there are unnecessary (or even a joke), and to keep up the good work.
That said, there are plenty of legitimate baby safety products that you might want to invest in for your new parent friend. Here are a few ideas.
Baby Bath Tub: My parents bathed my sisters and me with a sponge until we could hold our heads up, and then it was the sink lined with a towel. That’s pretty simple! But a baby bath tub does help make baby a bit safer while also helping Mom and Dad without so much mess. They make bath tubs that gauge the temperature, have head supports, and even prevent baby from bumping his head on the faucet. You don’t have to go all out, though; a simple baby tub will work fine.
Outlet Covers: Yes, these are a must-have. And why not? Those outlets look very interesting when you’re first toddling around! My sister stuck a fork in one when she was two and got quite a scare. Thankfully, she wasn’t hurt badly. Get a set with enough covers for the whole house.
Smoke Alarm and Batteries: This is a given. Everyone, whether they have kids or not, needs a couple of these babies in the house. If your friend doesn’t already have them, get them. A carbon monoxide monitor can also come in handy.
Sunblock and Sun Hats: While newborns aren’t supposed to wear sunblock, once baby is big enough to go out and sit in the sun on a blanket he or she is definitely going to need some UV protection.
Baby Toothbrush and Toothpaste: This isn’t exactly a safety precaution, but today’s kids have much better teeth because their parents aren’t putting them to bed with bottles and are cleaning out their mouths from day one. They make a special soft cleaning device that fits your finger for little babies; that’s what we used on our daughter.
